Native Dancer

We grew up with and went to school with the First Nations people at Siksika, and as a teenager, I used to do pastel portraits of some of the elders I knew.  I haven't had the opportunity to do that for years, but last summer when I was at the Calgary Stampede, my friend Don stopped by my booth in his dancing regalia, and agreed to let me take his photo.  Don is  Cree man from Hobema, working with the youth on his reserve.  He's a strong advocate for the traditional ways of his people, and a wise and gentle inflluence on their lives.    SOLD

Janet

This dynamo of a woman is Janet,  third generation in the guest services industry in our Banff National Park. Among the activities she and her family have on the go are sleigh rides at Lake Louise, trail rides, a golf course,  a lodge in Banff and catering to hikers in the high country!  Just one of their family treasures is this pair of antique chaps handed down from her grand dad.  Combined with the vintage cowgirl shirt, we could wonder what century we're in. SOLD

Meadowlark Welcome

Here's another meadowlark to help  us in to spring and ward off any snow that  thinks it's coming our way! I hear them out in the coulee below my house, but they're faint and few. I'm hoping more are on their way and that the gulf oil spill hasn't decimated their numbers   (that's where they winter.)  So lets all send them "white Light" to help them find their way home to us.   SOLD

Big Bend

It occurs to me that I've spent almost my entire life living on this river.  It's called the Bow where I grew up, and where my brother and cousin still ranch.  When I was a child, our cow camps on the river were my favourite places in the world.  Here @ Medicine Hat, after the Old Man has joined the Bow, it's called the South Saskatchewan. Whatever the name, it's a magnificent river. SOLD

Paul & Cash

Lots of guys like cars, motorycles or dangerous stunts.  Quite a few guys I know love horses, and Paul is one of those guys. Not only beautiful, but well-broke,  well equipped and lovingly tended horses.
I think it was Winston Churchill who said "The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man."  SOLD

West to Black Diamond

This is the landscape SW of Calgary, minus a few buildings and a power line.  Still, it's pretty beautiful.  Not for long though I fear, as every time I go there, Calgary has sprawled several miles further out; with a footprint bigger than that of New York City, it seems an insatiable beast.  We hear so much about CO2 emissions, but when will we wake up and realize we've squandered all our arable land, and paved everything that was beautiful and good?  SOLD

Sarge

This beautiful dog belongs to friends of mine, and since the first time I saw him, he fascinated me.  The painting doesn't show his enormous size and personal "presence", but he's stunning. His breeding includes husky, malamute and wolf, and the first impression is of the "wolf" part.  However, aside from his huge size, the malamute shows up in his facial markings and bushy arching tail.
It doesn't take long to realize either, that he's really a big lovable sap in wolf's clothing.
